New World Record for Candles on Cake
Guinness world record champion Ashrita Furman set a new world record with an international team in Queens, New York, by lighting 48,523 candles to burn simultaneously on a huge cake. Furman is the holder of 85 currently standing Guinness world records—more than any other Guinness figure. His 48,000-candle event will become his 86th record. Furman staged the event on a cake spanning 52 by 17 feet (15.8 by 5.2 meters.) Furman, manager of a New York health food store, dedicated the new Guinness Record as an expression of gratitude to his Indian born spiritual teacher, Sri Chinmoy (1931-2007), who would have reached the age of 77 on 27 August 2008. Furman stated: “Sri Chinmoy has such a giant heart, so we want to celebrate his birthday with a giant cake.”
A team of 200 helpers spent several hours counting and inserting the 48,000 small, colourful birthday candles in a cake spanning 52 by 17 feet. The candles were lit in a space of just two minutes by a second team of 80 assistants with blow torches. The audience of 1100 friends and supporters of Sri Chinmoy’s lifetime of work for world harmony sang the traditional “Happy Birthday” song. Sri Chinmoy is the initiator of the World Harmony Run which brought together millions of people in 140 countries in the spirit of friendship since 1987. After the candles were extinguished, many members of the audience enjoyed a piece of cake.
Furman had been waiting to attempt the new record after his previous record of 27,000 candles was upset by a Canadian team who lit 30,000 candles in September, 2006. Other Guinness world records by Furman include the largest flower bouquet (101,791 roses), underwater juggling, bobbing 33 apples in one minute and covering a mile the fastest while twirling a hula hoop and balancing a milk bottle on his head.

Good News for Runners
A study by Stanford University Medical Center found that elderly joggers were half as likely to die prematurely from conditions like cancer than non-runners. They also found that runners were more likely to lead healthy lifestyles and suffer less disabilities.
According to lead author Professor James Fries:
If you had to pick one thing to make people healthier as they age, it would be aerobic exercise

Sri Chinmoy's 23rd Weightlifting Anniversary
Sri Chinmoy lifting pyramid of 15 men
June 26 was the 23rd Anniversary of the beginning of Sri Chinmoy's serious weight lifting and the 20th Anniversary of the `Lifting Up The World' program. There was a function in New York to commemorate this significant anniversary.
Arpan kindly wrote a function report, which you can read here - Weightlifting anniversary
"It was and still is obvious that Sri Chinmoy's weightlifting was not really about a strong man trying to get stronger. It was really about a great Spiritual Master who had a dynamic approach to faith in God and tried to include as many people as were inspired to participate in his efforts to show how important and real this faith is for all of us in our own lives. His lifting of seemingly impossible weights, objects and subjects was a dramatically convincing way to show us how any of us, even a small Indian Yogi, can work toward achieving what only seems impossible to our minds if we use our faith and hearts of Oneness."

Oneness Heart Tears and Smiles
Oneness Heart Tears and Smiles is a humanitarian programme founded by Sri Chinmoy. To date, it has distributed humanitarian aid to nearly 150 countries around the world. There is now a new website, which in the future, will host recent programmes and initiatives.
To Sri Chinmoy charitable and humanitarian projects were always an expression of a oneness heart which seeks to identify with others.
“With our loving hearts, we identify and become one with what others are. This power that loves can solve world problems. This power is full of self-giving, not with a sense of sacrifice, but with the feeling of serving all humanity as our own brothers and sisters. Through both our loving silence and devoted service, we contribute to the betterment of the entire world.”

Feedback on Grebenshikov Concert
If you went to the recent Boris Purushottama Grebenshikov Concert at the Royal Albert Hall, you are welcome to leave a message here
Recently, we published some photos and review of the concert here

Concert at Royal Albert Hall
Boris Purushottama Grebenshikov and members of the International Orchestra.
In 2007, Sri Chinmoy wanted to offer his dear friend Boris Purushottama Grebenshikov the opportunity to play at the Royal Albert Hall. Organised by the UK Sri Chinmoy Centres the concert was a great success and, with the encouragement of Sri Chinmoy, a repeat concert was scheduled for 2008.
Since Sri Chinmoy's mahasamadhi in October 2007, Purushottama, wished to dedicate this year's concert to his dear friend and teacher - Sri Chinmoy
Boris Purushottama Grebenshikov in ConcertFor this years concert, Boris Purushottama Grebenshikov, was joined by a range of international music stars including: Flautist Brian Finnegan, bodhrán player John Joe Kelly, Sitar player Sheema Mukherjee, and Sarangi player Maria Pomianowska. (See: listing of musicians)
The musicians kindly gave up a big chunk of their time to come together and perform this special concert. Very few of the musicians had played together before; but, they were able to achieve a remarkable degree of musical harmony and intuition in the short space of 2 weeks they had to practice. Even more remarkable was how well the divergent musical styles and traditions merged together, giving a unique performance. The musical styles varied from the classical Indian tradition of Arpan Patel's harmonium and singing, to the Irish folk music of Brian Finnigan.
Sitar player Sheema Mukherjee,
The promotion of the concert was a great success, with the Royal Albert Hall, full on the night with approximately 5,000 people inside. This included over 350 members of the Sri Chinmoy Centre, who had come from around the world, including America, Australia and many European countries.

Amongst the songs, performed included 2 dedicated to Sri Chinmoy written by Purushottama.

The concert was again organised by the Sri Chinmoy Centre. In particular, the two brothers Sahadeva Torpy and Devashishu Torpy were instrumental in bringing together the musicians and promoting the concert. The even was sponsored by specialist running shop, Run and Become.
A team of volunteers also worked on a unique stage design, featuring statues of Ganesh and Saraswati.

Mount Snowdon dedicated as a Peace Blossom Mountain
Mount Snowdon, the tallest mountain in Wales, was dedicated as a peace blossom mountain in a ceremony coinciding with the arrival of the World Harmony Run.
The runners were met at the bottom of Mount Snowdon by Mrs Owen of Gwynedd County Council, and Lord Elis Thomas the presiding officer of the Welsh Parliament. The runners then set off up the slopes of Mount Snowdon with others following in a train. There was a light hearted race with the runners trying to beat the train to the top ( which they succeeded in doing)

At the top of the Mountain, there was an informal ceremony with people holding the torch and sharing their wishes for World Harmony.

2 New Records and Some Italian Ice Cream
On a recent visit to Europe, Ashrita succeeded in breaking two Guinness World Records, despite gaining 7 pounds, (courtesy of Italian ice cream.)
Ashrita's first record was for the most jumps on a pogo stick in one minute. Ashrita managed to break the record, completing 256 valid jumps in one minute, adding an extra 12 jumps to the previous record of 234. (This works out at over 4 jumps per second). The record was set to the backdrop of the famous coliseum in Rome.
Ashrita's second successful attempt was in Munich, at the Impossibility Challenger event. This involved running a sub eight minute mile on stilts.
The Impossibility Challenger event is held annually in Munich and involves a diverse range of feats of self transcendence. Previous challenges have involved, the longest continual laughing, playing music for 24 hours non stop, and riding a bicycle the wrong way. Often the event attracts quite a few Guinness World Record attempts.
